Welcome to the J.R. Filanc Construction Engineering and Management Program
About the CEM Program at SDSU
The J.R. Filanc Construction Engineering and Management Program
The J.R. Filanc Construction Engineering and Management Program is supported by an endowment established by a generous gift from Jane E. and Jack R. Filanc in memory of their daughter, Julia L. Filanc, a graduate of San Diego State University. Jack Filanc founded what would become J.R. Filanc Construction Company in 1952. The endowment supports faculty and students in the program, as well as the biannual J.R. Filanc Lecture in Construction Ethics. J.R. Filanc Construction Company specializes in the construction of water treatment and wastewater treatment plants, pump stations, and other water-related facilities for cities and municipal agencies throughout the Southwest. Functioning as a pure general contractor, the company self-performs 70% of the work on its construction projects.
The Jim Ryan Chair in Construction Management
This endowed position resulted from a major fundraising effort led by AGC San Diego and Mr. Jim Ryan to support the growth of the J.R. Filanc CEM (JRFCEM) Program. Most members of the JRFCEM advisory board contributed to this endowment and voted to name the position after Mr. Jim Ryan, former CEO of AGC San Diego, who led the fundraising efforts on behalf of the JRFCEM Program. (This new position will be awarded in the Fall 2024 semester.)
The Beavers Lecturer in Heavy Construction
The Beavers Charitable Trust showed a strong commitment to the JRFCEM Program by supporting the campaign for the Jim Ryan Chair in Construction Management, and most recently to establish an endowed lecturer position in Heavy Construction. The Program currently has a number of disciplines that support the Heavy Civil sector, and this position will strengthen our ties with the Heavy Civil industry and provide much needed support to our faculty. (This position will be formally awarded in the Fall 2024.)
